Honouring Korean War Veterans at Honey Bees Restaurant

Korean War Veterans at Honey Bees Restaurant

At Honey Bees Restaurant, we believe in celebrating our community and honouring those who have made tremendous sacrifices for our freedom. On a heartfelt occasion earlier this year, Sonia Park-Lawrence, the Korean-born owner of Honey Bees, had the honour of hosting a special luncheon for four living Korean War veterans from Yarmouth County. This gathering was more than just a meal—it was a tribute to their courage, service, and the lasting bond between Korea and Canada.

The veterans—Arnold Robert (Bob) Garron (90), Leslie J. Muise (91), Nelson J. Deveau (90), and Glendon V. Gavel (92)—were deeply moved by Sonia’s gesture. Bob Garron expressed his gratitude, saying, “She treats us with respect and dignity. We are special people to her.” The event left a lasting impression, and Bob excitedly shared that Sonia plans to host another luncheon next year.

For Sonia, the event was personal. Having attended three of the six annual Korean War Armistice commemorations held by the Wedgeport Legion Branch 155, she is profoundly thankful for the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers, who fought alongside South Korea in the 1951-1953 war to defend freedom and democracy. It’s a legacy she cherishes and feels a deep connection to.

The luncheon at Honey Bees Restaurant was not just a meal but an opportunity for these veterans to reminisce about their experiences on the Korean front lines. Glendon V. Gavel, reflecting on the gathering, mentioned how he spent an almost sleepless night recalling memories of the war, though he did find rest the following day.

Introduced to the Wedgeport Legion by veteran Leslie J. Muise, Sonia and Leslie have since formed a close friendship. The gathering, coordinated by Legionnaire Cyrille LeBlanc, included not only the veterans but also their escorts and fellow Legion members, for a total of 11 guests at the event. It was an occasion filled with warmth, gratitude, and a shared respect for those who have served.

As a restaurant owner, Sonia sees her role as more than just providing great food; it’s about giving back to the community that has supported her. By honouring the Korean War veterans in such a meaningful way, she has made a lasting impact—one that will be remembered for years to come.

Stay tuned for future events at Honey Bees, where we continue to celebrate the community and those who have given so much.
